Soul Patch summary
In this darkly intriguing follow-up to the Shamus and Barry winningThe James Deans, ex-NYPD cop turned P.I. and entrepreneur, Moe Prager is faced with a gut-wrenching case. The apparent suicide of his old friend and NYPD Chief of Detectives, Larry McDonald, forces Moe back onto the decaying Coney Island streets he patrolled when he was in uniform. But now, beneath the boardwalk and behind the rusted and crumbling rides of the midway, he finds a trail of death, betrayal, and corruption reaching back to 1972. As Faulkner once said, “The past is never dead. It isn’t even past.” So it goes for Moe Prager in Soul Patch.

Praise for Soul Patch
New York cop-turned-PI Moe Prager returns to his Coney Island roots in the fourth entry of Coleman's outstanding series. When Moe is summoned to meet privately with old friend Larry McDonald, who is now the NYPD chief of detectives, he's surprised at what he learns. When that same officer ends up dead shortly thereafter, Moe is unwillingly pulled into the investigation not only of Larry's death but also of criminal behavior by police officers dating back 30 years. He is forced to work with current NYPD officers who reciprocate his distrust and an ex-partner whose criminal activity had ended their friendship. Complicating matters further, the married Moe begins to fall for a female cop with a surprising tie to his past. Moe Prager is an engaging if reluctant hero; his struggles with family and fidelity remind us of his vulnerability. Coleman's The James Deans won Shamus, Barry, and Anthony awards, and this latest effort is even more impressive. Enthusiastically recommended for all public libraries.
